The Coastal Town Sound!
Hello Coastal Town! Thank you for talking with me today! As a band, how would you describe your sound?
Indie Pop! Although as a real band we’ve noticed that neither “indie” or “pop” mean much anymore. Strong lyrics and sweet vocals are always at the core of our sound, but the genre can go anywhere from alternative to dance to pop punk. So, we just say indie pop! How do you make sure your music stays on brand for you?
If we feel like it has an original idea and it sticks in our heads a few days later, then those songs are the keepers. For our first album, we worked with a producer named Doug Fury, who is currently playing guitar and producing for Bif Naked. We allowed him a lot of freedom to nudge us out of our comfort zone, and we are so happy with the results! Our motto was to go where the song takes us. Sometimes if a song wants to be a pop punk anthem, then that’s where it’s gotta go! What is the most surreal moment in your career so far?
We’ve gotten to know a number of amazing artists and joined some awesome artist communities. Learning from people a few (or a lot of) steps ahead of us has been really cool. Especially for a young but real band like us. Who would be a dream collaboration for you all?
Beabadoobee would be our dream collaboration! She has such a cool 90’s influenced sound, and I think she’d be a lot of fun. She is also very diverse in her songwriting, which is what we always strive for. It’s been really cool watching her blow up, and then blow up again. I think she’s got at least one more blow up left in her! Where do you all find inspiration for your music?
The inspiration for our first two songs came from Daylight Savings Time and Percy Shelley’s Ozymandias respectively, so we try to find inspiration wherever we can. We’ve got a nerd rock anthem coming out at the end of this summer and another song inspired by sea otters. Our goal is to try and find unique and interesting things to write about… yes sea otters. Do you have any projects coming up we can be on the lookout for?
Yes, we are releasing an album as singles over the course of 2021. The youngest members of our real band are 14 years old, and our oldest member is married and very old, maybe too old to be in a rock band. His wife had a baby during the production of our album, and so the last song we recorded was dedicated to her. It’s called So Innocent and will be out May 7th. Please let our readers know where to find you!
