Talking Creativity and Music with Maro DēLo!!
Updated: Jul 9
Hi Maro! Thank you for chatting with me today!
You are releasing your new song! Will you tell us about it?
Yes! It’s called “Magic Garden,” written by Gary Miller, is a song about being a supportive significant other and giving your love interest an outlet to confide in.
What was the coolest part of the creative process for it?
Although I was not part of the writing process of this song, I most certainly was part of the process of making a song “your own;” a project I had not experienced before Magic Garden came along.
Gary Miller had written this song back in the mid-2000’s, inspired by John Mayer’s Continuum album as well as Michael Buble’s releases from the same era. According to Miller, he had this song sitting in his catalog for years, struggling to find an artist who was, in his words, unique enough to pull it off gracefully.
As a matter of fact, right before Gary and I started working together, he sent me a collection of songs he’d written and produced so that I could get a feel for how our sounds would mesh, of which included Magic Garden. It stood out to me compared to everything else. Before he even brought up that he wanted me to have the song, I could already see myself singing it, something I don’t even remotely think about unless I find a cover song that I feel through each and every bone. Magic Garden did that for me, and I’m SO glad I decided to go with it!
Due to COVID restrictions keeping from me from going to LA, I re-tracked the vocals with David Ivory, who really brought the final performance (out of me) that this song needed.
You have started to perform live again correct?
Yes I have!
How has that been going, and do you have any shows coming up that readers can keep up with?
I perform live on SessionsLIVE and Instagram Live, a segment I like to call “Monday’s with Maro!” For in-person gigs, I currently have a tour being booked starting mid-September, wrapping up at the end of September. The dates and locations can be found on my website and Spotify page!
If there were no roadblocks between you and your dream project, what would that project be?
If I had to choose, I would play the biggest stages possible: A Maro DēLo World Tour. Performing live is something that has always truly fed my soul and creativity! If you could have dinner with an artist past or present and get to talk to them about music, who would it be?J
John Mayer, without hesitation. John, if you’re reading this, we have a LOT to talk about; I could go on for hours. What do you do when you have writer's block or a creative block? Any go-to ways to shake yourself out of it?
The thing that I found works the absolute best is to just put it down, go do something you know you can do without a roadblock, then come back to it once you’ve let go of whatever was holding you back. Whatever that thing may be to distract yourself with, just do it. It will save you a lot of time and frustration!
Please let everyone know how they can keep up with you and your music!
