D Boone Pittman on Dream Venues, Music Inspiration, and More!

Hello! Thank you for speaking with me today!

Tell us about your latest project! Coming off the release of my first album in 2019 (Bluegrass American Dream), we were poised to tour in support of it. The pandemic put the brakes on that so I was able to spend several months focused on writing. With so much happening around us it wasn't hard to find the subject matter. The title track, “Emerge”, was written in the thick of things. Pandemic, fear, politics, racism and protests were all over the news. It was a helpless feeling, so I guess writing was my way of living through it. I can remember thinking to myself while witnessing all the division and hatred, we really have to figure this out for the sake of our kids and our grandkids. They deserve something better than this. “Emerge” was born looking through that lens. “The Quarantine Song” was an attempt at levity. It tells the story of an introvert during the pandemic where very little has changed, because they really didn’t like being around people in the first place. “Casey Jones” and “She Likes the Beach” were both written on a songwriting retreat in Gatlinburg, TN in June of 2020. We were just hiding from the world sitting on the back porch of a rented chalet. The first was my obligatory Kentucky historical ballad (I did Furnace Mountain on the first album) telling the true story of railroad engineer “Casey Jones”. “She Likes the Beach” sprung from this idea I had of an older couple approaching retirement age and trying to agree on where they want to finally settle at. My personal favorite, “The Revelation”, is a narrative story about a young man’s spiritual experience while being thrown in jail for a night with an older, homeless Afghan veteran.

“Medusa’s Love” is the only song that wasn’t written in 2020. It was a rewrite of an earlier tune I started in the 90s that tell the story of heartbreaker that destroys men. “Clyde” (Waylon Jennings), and “Pilgrim” (Steve Earle), were both covers of two of my heroes.

“Jordache Jenny”, a humorous story of an unrequited eight grade romance and a pair of jeans. Finally, “Rise” was written in response to the relapse of one of my friends. It was so easy to apply it to the nature of the world at the time and the hope of a promising future. It also carries spiritual undertones for the hope of an even brighter future that is eternal. Seemed like a good closer to me. The album is a combination of roots and outlaw country with a focus on life during a global pandemic. From the unifying title track, to the hope filled “Rise”, I’m just trying to connect the music with the struggles of a nation seeking to emerge to better days.

What is a dream venue for you to perform in?

Tough one. I would have to say the Ryman with Red Rocks a close second.

What has been keeping you inspired to create recently?

I live in a hotbed of just really great music. It’s an honor to be a part of all the great music that is coming out of the state of KY. Great songwriting is alive and well and I want to be included in that circle. But the competition is strong and so is my ambition. I want to play on all the stages my contemporaries are playing on and I will work my tail off to get there.

What has been the biggest game changer in your career this far? Probably the break I took when my son was born. It was during this hiatus that I was able to develop as a vocalist, as a musician, and as a songwriter.

Who would you say is your biggest cheerleader in your career?

My wife

How important do you think it is for artists to know and understand music history?

In the genre of country music it is huge. Country music always has a way of coming full circle back to tradition, and it will continue to do so.

Any upcoming projects you want us to know about?

I'm in the writing stages for the next project. I expect it to be more bluegrass. I'm hoping to collaborate with my friend and producer Doug Roysden in Abilene Texas. We want to do this one in analog. Looking at a 2023 release.

Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
