All Things Music with Katie Pederson!
Hello Katie! Great to speak with you today!
Thanks, you too! What have you been working on lately?
I've been working on a new record called, "Limitless!" It comes out April 22, 2022 on Earth Day and I'm quite excited about it. Who inspired you to get into music?
My first thought is my mom - she was the first person who really encouraged me in my singing, and was always incredibly supportive of me learning piano and wanting to sing more. When was the first time you recall thinking that you wanted to pursue music as your career?
I remember in high school, playing Sara Bareilles' love song for a talent show. I remember getting off stage and thinking, "I want to do that forever." It was the first time I had played piano in that way (I was classically trained, so pop was pretty new for me), but the feeling of singing and playing was so exhilarating. Besides singing all over the house as a kid, I would say that talent show was really a moment that solidified it for me.
What is your favorite song you've ever released and why?
Ahh that's such a hard question! It's impossible to pick a favorite I think because as an artist, any song you choose to release is like choosing your favorite kid. lol But I guess I will say that one of my favorite's off of the new record is "M-22." It's a really chill/sad song, and so we stripped the production down quite a bit but added some electronic synths and whispery components that were totally different from any other songs I've released. So I guess at the current moment, I would say M-22 just because producing that one was a lot of fun creatively. Who are some of the artists currently inspiring you? Oh man. So many to choose from. Maggie Rogers. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. Phoebe Bridgers. Christian Lee Hutson. My friends - Jiliian Linklater, Grace Theisen, Bronte Fall and Brother Elsey. It's honestly hard to pick an artist at the moment that I am not inspired by. I've just recently been hit by what a brave and powerful and scary thing it is to be pursuing music full time, putting your whole self into what you create, and so I'm just really inspired by the people who are showing up as their whole/full selves and leaning all the way in. Have you been performing live again as shows are picking back up? Yes! I've been playing a lot of writers rounds in Nashville recently, but I have two big album release shows coming up towards the end of this month, one in Nashville at the 5 Spot on April 21, 2022 and one in my hometown of Ann Arbor, MI at the Ark on April 24, 2022. What is your favourite song to perform? Songs with a full band or any that I get to sing harmonies with - post 2020, I'm just reveling in making music with other people again. What are you hoping to see in the music world as it continues to evolve? I'm hoping to see more representation as it continues to evolve. As frustrating as it can be sometimes to keep up with the music industry being in constant change, one true silver lining has been seeing more people of all different backgrounds, races, cultures, genders and sexualities represented in top songs in the midst of the content creation age that we are in right now. I think broad reaching services (like spotify and tik tok) can make it possible for independent artists to reach the audience that needs to hear music from different perspectives, especially/including those listeners who may not have had the opportunity to know or learn that artists who share those perspectives exist. I'd like to continue to see more of that as the industry grows. Please let everyone know how they can keep up with you and your music! You can find me on any streaming platform at Katie Pederson and on socials at @katiepedersonmusic Thank you for your time!
